Nuts

There are many different kinds of nuts out there. Salted peanuts, dry roasted, honey roasted, etc. The one nut I’m already tired of is the one in Virginia.

I don’t mean to be insensitive. 33 people died, and that’s terrible. I can’t imagine this type of thing happening to me or someone I know, and dealing with it must be one of the most terrible things that can happen to a family or community. But what I’m having difficulty with it the constant analysis of the nut that did this.

I admit, I’m not up on all the details about this guy. I don’t know what his particular malfunction was or if he should have been in an institution or whose fault it was that he went freaking apeshit. There are a lot of people out there who need help in some form or another. But it isn’t until we start to try to pin blame on other people due to a tragedy that we start to think about solving these problems.

The issues aren’t with this one, specific nut. It’s not his roommate’s fault or his parents’ fault that he was nuts, and I think we should stop looking at the issue so specifically.

Furthermore, part of me is agitated about the fact that this kind of thing is happening to communities in Iraq every day. Families lose loved ones. Friends lose people they care about. And somehow we’re all desensitized to it. Maybe people over there just need to have video phones….

I found it amazing that Bush actually said it was "incomprehensible" while at almost the same moment 127 people were dying in Iraq. What's incomprehensible? 32 people? Heck, that's a slow day for the Bush administration's foreign policy.

Besides, the folks at Wounded Knee might argue that this particular massacre wasn't very "incomprehensible" at all.
