15th Bi-Annual Toronto (Kansas) Queer Film Fest

| | Comments (0)
In an ongoing tradition, several of the most snarky queer cinema critics got together for a makeshift film festival once again in Toronto, Kansas. Indeed they were the only 4 queer folks in one room for at least a hundred miles (and there were lights too!). For four evenings they perused some interesting films...
The films:
A Very Serious Person – 4.5 stars
Sordid Lives – 5 stars
Boys Love – 2 stars
Running with Scissors – 3 and a half stars, and half a crazy star
A Very Serious Person – This movie is a charming one about a boy, his family, and his bond with the first gay person he knows – the nurse who comes to take care of his grandmother. There were a few times I wanted to slap the child, but the nurse took care of that for me. There are some great lines from the movie, and although is serious (as the name implies) there are enough light-hearted moments to keep the story from becoming too dramatic. A good line: “You Americans always want to be happy. Why is it necessary to walk around every day like a grinning village idiot?''

Sordid Lives – A well-paced and funny film following the individual lives of a family, as well as how they relate together in the end. (all in coming together for a funeral) This group of people is full of surprises, and all have some memorable lines. The cast includes Delta Burke and Olivia Newton-John, although neither are overbearing on the film, and there are some other great performances. I was especially fond of Leslie Jordan’s Brother Boy. One if his great lines: “Well I did it. I walked all the way down that hall with one less piece of female attire. That is if you consider a wig attire.” And if you liked the movie, you can see it as a series on Logo starting in July.

Running with Scissors – I have to say I liked this movie, although it was very strange. It’s about a boy, Augusten, growing up in the most unusual circumstances. From his strange and bizarre parents to living with his mother’s psychologist, there are a myriad of strange things that happen. I mean, when the poo in the toilet is a sign from god you know things have gotten weird. Strange movie, but worth seeing.

Boys Love – This film was good for awhile. Then it just got a little nuts, and from there went all Romeo and Juliet on us. I think the overall theme was about falling in love, and how sometimes we can’t help ourselves and how often we make it not work. Well, watch for the kid with the crazy eyes, because he takes this storyline and takes it just a bit to the unbelievable side. Let’s just say that knives don’t make love work… generally.
